Mulch Calculator

The Mulch Calculator converts your garden bed dimensions and desired depth into cubic yards (or cubic meters) and bags of mulch, so you buy exactly what you need for a healthy, weed-suppressing layer. The formula treats your bed as a uniform block — it doesn't account for mulch settling into gaps around dense plantings or uneven ground, so heavily planted beds may need slightly more material than the flat math suggests. Because bag count is total volume divided by your chosen bag size and always rounded up (partial bags aren't sold), switching from 2 cu ft bags to 3 cu ft bags changes only how many bags you buy, not the total volume ordered. This also computes one fresh application only; organic mulch compacts and decomposes over 6–12 months, so a top-up later is usually a separate, smaller order rather than something to size in upfront.

How This Tool Works

Pick your units, enter your bed's length and width, choose a mulch depth (2–3 inches / 5–8 cm is typical), and see how many cubic yards, cubic meters, or bags to buy.

Formula & Method

Volume = area × depth. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27; cubic meters use the metric dimensions directly. Bags needed = total volume ÷ bag size (cubic feet in U.S. units, liters in metric).

Example Calculation

A 15×10 ft bed (150 sq ft) at 3 inches deep: volume = 150 × (3 ÷ 12) = 150 × 0.25 = 37.5 cubic feet. Cubic yards = 37.5 ÷ 27 = 1.39 cu yd. Bags needed (2 cu ft each) = 37.5 ÷ 2 = 18.75, rounded up to 19 bags. In metric, a 4×2 m bed (8 m²) at 5 cm deep: volume = 8 × 0.05 = 0.4 m³ (400 L). Bags needed (50 L each) = 400 ÷ 50 = 8 bags exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should mulch be?+

Most garden beds do best with 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) of mulch. Deeper layers can trap moisture against stems and roots and encourage rot.

How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?+

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it takes about 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch (or 9 bags of 3 cu ft mulch) to equal one cubic yard. A cubic meter is about 20 bags of 50 L mulch.

Can I calculate mulch in cubic meters?+

Yes — switch the unit toggle to Metric and enter your bed in meters with the depth in centimeters and bag size in liters. The result is returned in cubic meters and liters.

Is bagged or bulk mulch cheaper?+

Bulk mulch delivered by the cubic yard (or cubic meter) is usually cheaper for large areas, while bagged mulch is more convenient for small beds.

Why does the bag count always round up?+

The calculator divides your total cubic footage by the bag size and rounds up to the nearest whole bag — for example 18.75 bags becomes 19 — since stores don't sell partial bags. Expect a small amount of leftover mulch on most orders.

Do I need to account for mulch settling or breaking down over time?+

No — this calculates the volume for one fresh application at your chosen depth. Organic mulch typically compacts and decomposes over 6–12 months, so most gardeners plan a separate top-up order later rather than doubling this order upfront.
