Word Counter

The Word Counter gives you live statistics for any text — word count, character count with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading and speaking time. Everything is counted in your browser as you type. Writers use it to hit strict word-count targets for essays, cover letters, and college application prompts, while marketers rely on the character count to stay within platform limits like social post captions or meta description lengths. Because sentence and paragraph counts update in real time, it also doubles as a quick way to spot overly long, run-on sentences while editing.

Speaking time

Everything is counted in your browser as you type — your text is never uploaded or stored. Reading time assumes ~200 words per minute; speaking time ~130.

How This Tool Works

Type or paste your text into the box. The counts for words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and reading and speaking time update instantly as you edit — no button to press.

Formula & Method

Words are counted as groups of characters separated by spaces; characters are counted directly. Reading time assumes an average of 200 words per minute and speaking time about 130 words per minute.

Example Calculation

A 500-word blog intro shows 500 words, roughly 2,800 characters, and an estimated reading time of about 2 minutes 30 seconds. Paste a 750-word cover letter and the counter instantly shows 750 words, about 32 sentences, and 5 paragraphs — reading time about 3 minutes 45 seconds, and speaking time about 5 minutes 46 seconds, useful for checking whether a speech draft fits its time slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the word count match Microsoft Word or Google Docs?+

It matches closely — words are counted as space-separated tokens, the same basic method those editors use. Very unusual spacing or punctuation can cause tiny differences.

Is there a character limit?+

No. Paste as much text as you like — everything is processed locally in your browser, so there is no upload limit or account needed.

Is my text private?+

Completely. Your text is never sent to or stored on any server — all counting happens in your own browser and disappears when you close the tab.

How is reading time calculated?+

Reading time uses an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute; speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, a typical presentation pace.

How are paragraphs counted?+

A paragraph is counted as a block of text separated by a blank line (a full line break). A single line break within a block of text doesn't start a new paragraph, so leave an empty line between paragraphs if you want them counted separately.

Does the word count work for languages without spaces, like Chinese or Japanese?+

Not accurately — since word counting relies on space-separated tokens, text in languages that don't use spaces between words will show an artificially low word count. The character count stays accurate either way, since it counts every character directly regardless of language.
