Asphalt Calculator
The Asphalt Calculator estimates the tonnage of hot-mix asphalt needed for a driveway or parking area based on its dimensions and desired thickness. Works in U.S. or metric units. The metric result isn't computed from a flat 2.32-tonnes-per-cubic-meter figure directly — the calculator first works out tonnage using the U.S. density constant (145 lb per cubic foot) after converting your metric inputs to feet and inches, then converts that tonnage to tonnes, so the displayed weight is accurate but arrives via the U.S. side of the math rather than a standalone metric calculation. Volume and weight both scale linearly with thickness, so doubling your thickness input exactly doubles the estimated tonnage — but the tool won't stop you from entering an unrealistically thin layer, so cross-check the result against your paving contractor's minimum spec for load-bearing surfaces.

How This Tool Works
Pick your units, then enter your driveway or lot's length, width, and thickness to calculate the estimated tonnage of asphalt needed.
Formula & Method
Volume = area × thickness. Tons ≈ cubic feet × 145 lb/cu ft ÷ 2,000 (standard hot-mix density). In metric that is roughly 2.32 tonnes per cubic meter. Enter area in feet with thickness in inches, or in meters with thickness in centimeters.
Example Calculation
A 30×20 ft driveway (600 sq ft) poured 4 inches thick: cubic feet = 600 × (4 ÷ 12) = 600 × 0.3333 = 200 cubic feet. Cubic yards = 200 ÷ 27 = 7.41 cu yd. Weight = 200 × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 29,000 ÷ 2,000 = 14.5 tons exactly. In metric, a 9×6 m driveway at 10 cm thick: volume = 9 × 6 × 0.10 = 5.40 m³, which the calculator's unit-conversion chain works out to about 12.54 tonnes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?+
Residential driveways typically use 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) of asphalt over a compacted gravel base; commercial areas with heavier traffic often need 4+ inches (10 cm+).
Can I calculate asphalt in tonnes?+
Yes — switch the unit toggle to Metric and enter your area in meters with the thickness in centimeters. Weight is returned in tonnes and volume in cubic meters.
Is this the same as the base layer?+
No, this estimates the asphalt surface layer only. The gravel base beneath it should be calculated separately with our Gravel Driveway Calculator.
How long does asphalt take to cure?+
Asphalt is typically firm enough to walk on within a day but can take 6–12 months to fully cure — avoid heavy loads or sharp turns during that period.
Why doesn't the metric result exactly match multiplying my cubic meters by 2.32?+
Because the calculator computes weight through the U.S. side of the math first — converting your metric dimensions to feet and inches, calculating tons using the 145 lb/cu ft density, then converting that tonnage to tonnes — rather than applying a flat 2.32-tonnes-per-cubic-meter figure directly. The two approaches land within a few hundredths of a tonne of each other, well inside the margin of error for any density estimate.
Does thicker asphalt always cost proportionally more?+
For material, yes — cubic feet and tons both scale linearly with thickness, so going from 3 inches to 6 inches exactly doubles the estimated tonnage. Labor and compaction costs don't necessarily scale the same way, since thicker pours are often laid in multiple compacted lifts rather than a single pass.
