Square Footage Calculator

The Square Footage Calculator converts length and width measurements into square feet, square yards, and acres — or square meters and hectares in metric mode — a quick reference for any home, land, or construction project. The formula is a plain rectangle calculation (length × width), so L-shaped rooms, bay windows, or angled walls need to be split into separate rectangles and summed rather than entered as a single measurement. Square yards and acres are exact conversions from square feet (1 acre is defined as exactly 43,560 sq ft), not rounded approximations, so the acreage figure carries real precision down to the decimals shown. Note that official real estate square-footage disclosures often follow specific standards (such as ANSI Z765) that exclude garages or unfinished spaces — this tool returns raw geometric area only, not a certified disclosure figure.

How This Tool Works

Pick your units, then enter the length and width of any space to instantly see its area in square feet, square yards, and acres — or square meters and hectares.

Formula & Method

Area = length × width. In U.S. units: square yards = square feet ÷ 9, acres = square feet ÷ 43,560. In metric: hectares = square meters ÷ 10,000.

Example Calculation

A 25×16 ft room: area = 25 × 16 = 400 sq ft. Square yards = 400 ÷ 9 = 44.44 sq yd. Acres = 400 ÷ 43,560 = 0.0092 acres. In metric, a 7×5 m room: area = 7 × 5 = 35 m². Hectares = 35 ÷ 10,000 = 0.0035 ha.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure an irregular room?+

Break the space into simple rectangles, calculate each one's area separately, and add them together for the total.

How many square feet are in an acre?+

One acre equals 43,560 square feet (about 4,047 m² or 0.405 hectares), or about 208.7 feet on each side if it were a perfect square.

Can I calculate area in square meters and hectares?+

Yes — switch the unit toggle to Metric and enter length and width in meters. The result is shown in square meters and hectares.

What's the difference between square feet and square yards?+

One square yard equals 9 square feet (a 3×3 ft area) — square yards are commonly used for carpet and fabric pricing.

Why do square yards and acres disappear in metric mode?+

Metric mode reports square meters and hectares instead, since square yards and acres aren't standard units outside U.S./U.K. land and flooring contexts. Switch back to U.S. units if you specifically need the yard or acre figures.

Can I use this figure for a real estate listing or appraisal?+

Treat it as a planning estimate, not a certified disclosure number. Real estate square footage often follows a specific measurement standard (like ANSI Z765) that excludes garages, unfinished areas, or measures from different wall points — this calculator only multiplies the length and width you enter.
