Brick Calculator

The Brick Calculator estimates the number of bricks needed to build a wall based on its area and the standard coverage rate for bricks with mortar joints. Works in U.S. (per sq ft) or metric (per m²) units. The calculator doesn't automatically subtract door or window openings from the wall area, so for walls with large openings you should subtract that square footage from your length × height input yourself, or the tool will over-order bricks. The default 7-bricks-per-square-foot (60-per-m²) rate assumes a standard single-wythe wall with a typical brick size and mortar joint — thicker double-wythe walls, oversized utility brick, or wider joints all change that ratio meaningfully, so treat the bricks-per-area field as something to adjust to your actual brick spec rather than leave at the default. Because the final count always rounds up to a whole brick, a calculated total like 1,540.4 becomes 1,541 — you can't buy a fractional brick, so expect a small number of leftovers on every order.

How This Tool Works

Pick your units, then enter your wall's length and height to calculate the number of bricks needed, adjusting the bricks-per-area rate for your specific brick size.

Formula & Method

Wall area = length × height. Bricks needed = area × bricks per unit area (default 7 per sq ft for U.S. modular brick, or 60 per m² for standard metric brick), plus your waste factor.

Example Calculation

A 25 ft long, 8 ft high wall (200 sq ft) at the default 7 bricks per sq ft with 10% waste: 200 × 7 = 1,400 bricks before waste. 1,400 × 1.10 = 1,540 bricks. In metric, a 5×2 m wall (10 m²) at the default 60 bricks per m² with 10% waste: 10 × 60 = 600 bricks before waste, 600 × 1.10 = 660 bricks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks are in a square foot of wall?+

Standard U.S. modular brick with 3/8" mortar joints averages about 7 bricks per square foot. A standard metric brick (215 × 65 mm) with 10 mm joints runs about 60 bricks per square meter.

Can I calculate bricks per square meter?+

Yes — switch the unit toggle to Metric and enter your wall in meters. The bricks-per-area rate defaults to 60 per m² for standard metric brick.

Does this include mortar?+

No, this calculates brick count only. Mortar needs vary by joint size and brick type — typically about 3 bags of mortar mix per 100 bricks as a rough guide.

Should I order extra bricks?+

Yes, a 10% waste allowance covers cuts and breakage. For irregular walls or intricate patterns, consider 15%.

Does the calculator subtract door and window openings from the wall?+

No — if your wall has openings, subtract their combined square footage from your length × height figures before entering them, or measure only the solid brick portion of the wall. Otherwise the calculator will over-order bricks for the openings that don't need any.

What if I'm building a double-wythe (two-brick-thick) wall?+

Increase the bricks-per-area field to roughly double the single-wythe rate — about 14 bricks per sq ft instead of 7, or 120 per m² instead of 60 — since each wythe needs its own full layer of brick across the same wall area.
