Deck Board Calculator

The Deck Board Calculator estimates the number of deck boards needed based on your deck size, board dimensions, and the gap between boards for drainage. Works in U.S. or metric units. Because the row count depends only on board width plus gap, it's calculated before the waste factor is applied — waste only inflates the linear-footage-to-boards conversion, so a deck that comes out to a fractional row (like 25.6) still rounds up to a full 26th row rather than leaving a narrow gap unfilled. The formula also assumes each board runs the deck's full length in one continuous piece; if your actual board length is shorter than the deck, you'll need to stagger butt joints mid-span, which uses more material than this calculator accounts for.

How This Tool Works

Pick your units, then enter your deck's length and width, your board's length and width, and the gap you plan to leave between boards for drainage.

Formula & Method

Rows across the deck width = deck width ÷ (board width + gap). Boards per row = deck length ÷ board length. Total boards include your chosen waste factor. Enter deck size in feet/inches or meters/centimeters.

Example Calculation

For a 16 ft × 12 ft deck (192 sq ft) using 12 ft boards that are 5.5 in wide with a 1/8 in (0.125 in) gap: rows across the width = ⌈(12 ft × 12) ÷ (5.5 + 0.125)⌉ = ⌈144 ÷ 5.625⌉ = ⌈25.6⌉ = 26 rows. Linear feet of decking = 26 rows × 16 ft = 416 linear ft. Boards needed before waste = 416 ÷ 12 = 34.67. Adding the default 10% waste factor: 34.67 × 1.10 = 38.13, rounded up to 39 boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much gap should I leave between deck boards?+

Most pros leave 1/8 to 3/16 inch (about 0.3–0.5 cm) between boards for drainage and to allow for natural wood expansion.

Can I plan decking in meters?+

Yes — switch the unit toggle to Metric and enter your deck in meters with board width and gap in centimeters.

Does this account for board direction?+

This calculator assumes boards run the length of the deck. If your boards run the width instead, swap your length and width entries.

Should I buy extra deck boards?+

Yes, the built-in waste factor covers most cutting losses, but keeping a couple of spare boards helps with future repairs or replacing damaged boards.

What happens if the deck width doesn't divide evenly into whole rows?+

The calculator always rounds the row count up rather than leaving a gap — a 12 ft (144 in) wide deck with 5.625 in of board-plus-gap spacing needs 25.6 rows, which rounds up to 26. That means your last row will typically be a board ripped narrower to fit, not a full-width board.

Does the waste factor affect how many rows I need?+

No — the waste factor only inflates the boards-per-row count (to cover end trims and mistakes), not the row count itself. Row count is a fixed geometric result of your deck width divided by board width plus gap, so changing the waste percentage won't change the number of rows shown.
