Fraction Calculator
The Fraction Calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides two fractions — including mixed numbers with a whole part — and shows the answer reduced to lowest terms as a fraction, a mixed number, and a decimal. When you enter a mixed number, the sign is read from the whole-number field if one is present, otherwise from the numerator — so for a negative mixed number, put the minus sign on the whole number (e.g., -2 for -2 1/4) rather than the fraction part, since a negative numerator is ignored once a nonzero whole number is entered. Dividing by a fraction that reduces to zero (a numerator of 0) is blocked with its own dedicated error message, separate from the general zero-denominator check, since 0/x is a valid fraction to enter but not one you can divide by.
Result
5/6
Enter an optional whole number plus a numerator over a denominator for each fraction. Results are automatically reduced to lowest terms and shown as a mixed number, an improper fraction, and a decimal.
How This Tool Works
Enter each fraction as an optional whole number plus a numerator over a denominator, pick an operation, and the simplified answer appears instantly as a mixed number, an improper fraction, and a decimal.
Formula & Method
Each entry is converted to an improper fraction. Addition and subtraction use a common denominator (a/b ± c/d = (ad ± bc)/bd); multiplication multiplies across (ac/bd); division multiplies by the reciprocal (ad/bc). The result is reduced by its greatest common divisor.
Example Calculation
Take 2 1/4 divided by 1 1/2. Each mixed number first converts to an improper fraction: 2 1/4 = (2×4 + 1)/4 = 9/4, and 1 1/2 = (1×2 + 1)/2 = 3/2. Dividing by a fraction multiplies by its reciprocal: 9/4 ÷ 3/2 = (9×2)/(4×3) = 18/12. Reducing by the greatest common divisor of 18 and 12, which is 6, gives 3/2 — a mixed number of 1 1/2, and as a decimal, 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can it handle mixed numbers?+
Yes. Enter a whole number alongside the numerator and denominator (for example 2 and 1/4 for two and one-quarter) and the calculator converts it automatically.
Does it simplify the answer?+
Always. The result is automatically reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor, and also shown as a mixed number and a decimal.
Can I use negative fractions?+
Yes — put a minus sign on the whole number or numerator and the calculator tracks the sign through the operation.
How do I enter a negative mixed number?+
Put the minus sign on the whole-number field, not the numerator — for example, whole = -2, numerator = 1, denominator = 4 for -2 1/4. If you leave the whole number blank or at 0, put the minus sign on the numerator instead (e.g., numerator = -1 for -1/4 alone). Once a nonzero whole number is entered, its sign determines whether the whole mixed number is negative.
What happens if I try to divide by zero?+
The calculator blocks it with a dedicated message rather than showing an error or an infinite result — if the second fraction's numerator is 0 (making it equal to zero), you'll see 'You can't divide by a fraction equal to zero' instead of a computed answer.
