Ideal Weight Calculator
The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates a healthy target weight using the Devine and Robinson formulas — two widely referenced clinical methods — plus the healthy BMI weight range for your height. The Devine formula was originally developed for calculating medication dosages relative to body size in clinical settings, not as a fitness or aesthetic target. Because both formulas anchor to a baseline at 5 feet and add weight only for inches above that, anyone at or under 5 feet tall receives the same unadjusted base weight regardless of how much shorter they are.

How This Tool Works
Enter your sex and height to see an estimated ideal weight (averaging two clinical formulas) alongside the healthy BMI weight range for your height.
Formula & Method
Devine formula: men = 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft; women = 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft. Robinson formula: men = 52kg + 1.9kg per inch over 5ft; women = 49kg + 1.7kg per inch over 5ft. We average both.
Example Calculation
A woman 5'6" (168 cm) tall has an estimated ideal weight of about 131 lb (59 kg), with a healthy BMI range of roughly 115–154 lb (52–70 kg). A man 6'0" tall (12 inches over the 5-foot baseline) gets 77.6 kg from the Devine formula and 74.8 kg from Robinson, averaging to about 76.2 kg (168 lb), alongside a healthy BMI range of roughly 136–184 lb.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which formula is most accurate?+
No single formula is perfect for everyone — averaging the Devine and Robinson formulas gives a reasonable general estimate, but body composition and frame size matter too.
Why does the healthy BMI range differ from the ideal weight estimate?+
The Devine and Robinson formulas were developed for medication dosing, while the BMI range comes from a completely different population health standard — both are useful reference points.
Does this account for muscle mass?+
No, these formulas are based on height and sex alone. Athletes and muscular individuals may healthily weigh more than these estimates suggest.
Why do the Devine and Robinson formulas give slightly different results?+
Both start from a base weight at 5 feet and add a fixed amount per inch above that, but use different base weights and increments — Devine adds 2.3 kg per inch for both sexes, while Robinson adds 1.9 kg per inch for men and 1.7 kg for women. The gap widens slightly the taller you are, which is why this calculator averages them.
Is "ideal weight" the same as a "healthy weight"?+
Not exactly. The Devine/Robinson estimate is a single target number based only on height and sex, while the healthy BMI range shown alongside it reflects a broader span that better accounts for frame size and build. Treat both as reference points rather than a single number to hit exactly.
