Sod Calculator

The Sod Calculator converts your lawn area into the number of sod (turf) rolls or pallets you'll need to order, helping you avoid running short mid-installation. Works in square feet or square meters. Unlike the rolls figure, the pallets figure isn't rounded up — it's shown as a raw decimal (like 2.22 pallets) so you can see how close you are to needing an extra pallet, but if you're ordering by the whole pallet you still need to round that number up yourself. Roll size isn't universal: some suppliers cut standard rolls at 9 sq ft, others at 10 or 16.5 sq ft, and large-format "big rolls" can cover 500 sq ft or more, so always confirm your supplier's actual roll coverage rather than trusting the default. Because cut sod deteriorates within a day or two, most growers recommend ordering only what you can install within 24–48 hours rather than padding the order with a large buffer "just in case."

How This Tool Works

Pick your units, then enter your lawn's length and width to see how many individual rolls or full pallets of sod to order.

Formula & Method

Area = length × width. Rolls needed = area ÷ coverage per roll (default 9 sq ft / 0.84 m²). Pallets needed = area ÷ coverage per pallet (default 450 sq ft / 42 m²).

Example Calculation

A 40×25 ft lawn (1,000 sq ft) at the default 9 sq ft per roll: rolls = ceil(1,000 ÷ 9) = ceil(111.1) = 112 rolls. At the default 450 sq ft per pallet: pallets = 1,000 ÷ 450 = 2.22 pallets. In metric, a 12×8 m lawn (96 m²) at the default 0.84 m² per roll needs 115 rolls, or about 2.29 pallets at 42 m² per pallet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra sod should I order?+

Order 5–10% extra to account for irregular edges, curves, and cutting around obstacles like trees and flower beds.

Can I calculate turf in square meters?+

Yes — switch the unit toggle to Metric and enter your lawn in meters. Roll and pallet coverage default to typical metric turf sizes (about 0.84 m² per roll).

How long can sod sit before installing?+

Fresh sod should be installed within 24–48 hours of delivery — it can dry out or heat up in the roll and die if left too long.

Is sod or seed better for a new lawn?+

Sod gives an instant lawn and controls erosion immediately, while seed is cheaper but takes weeks to establish. See our Lawn Seed Calculator for the seeding option.

Why isn't the pallet count rounded up like the roll count?+

It's shown as an exact fraction, like 2.22 pallets, so you can compare ordering by the pallet versus by individual rolls. Round it up yourself if your supplier only sells full pallets — a partial pallet still means paying for the whole thing.

My supplier's roll size is different from the 9 sq ft default — what do I do?+

Update the 'Coverage per roll' field to match your supplier's actual roll size — check their spec sheet, since some cut smaller decorative rolls while others sell large-format rolls up to 500 sq ft — and the roll and pallet totals will recalculate automatically.
