How to calculate and understand your BMI
Short answer
BMI is your weight divided by your height squared. In metric it is kilograms divided by meters squared; in US units it is 703 times pounds divided by inches squared. Someone 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) weighing 165 pounds (75 kg) has a BMI of about 24.4, which lands in the healthy range. A BMI under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is healthy, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obesity. Treat BMI as a quick population screening tool, not a diagnosis of your individual health.

What BMI actually measures
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a single number that relates your weight to your height. It was designed in the 1800s by a mathematician, not a doctor, as a way to describe the average build of a population, and that origin still matters: BMI is a screening measure for groups, borrowed to give individuals a quick snapshot.
The idea is simple. Taller people tend to weigh more, so raw weight alone tells you little. Dividing weight by height squared strips out most of that height effect and leaves a figure you can compare against standard categories. What BMI does not measure is what your weight is made of, which is where its usefulness ends and its limits begin.
The formula in both unit systems
There are two versions of the same calculation, one for metric and one for US customary units. They give the same answer for the same person; only the units differ.
In metric, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters, squared. In US units, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide by your height in inches, squared. The 703 factor is just the conversion that makes pounds and inches land on the same scale as kilograms and meters.

The standard weight categories
Once you have a number, you read it against the categories set by the World Health Organization and used by most health agencies. These cutoffs are the same regardless of age or sex for adults.
The obesity band is sometimes split further into Class 1 (30 to 34.9), Class 2 (35 to 39.9), and Class 3 (40 and above), but for everyday use the four main groups are what you need.

- 18.5 to 24.9: healthy weight
- 25.0 to 29.9: overweight
- 30.0 and above: obesity
- These bands apply to adults 20 and older; children and teens use age- and sex-specific percentile charts instead
A worked example in both units
Take someone 5 feet 9 inches tall weighing 165 pounds, which is about 175 cm and 75 kg.
US units first. Height is 5 x 12 + 9 = 69 inches, and 69 squared is 4,761. Multiply weight by 703: 703 x 165 = 115,995. Divide: 115,995 / 4,761 = 24.4. That is a healthy-weight BMI.
Now metric, as a cross-check. Height is 1.75 m, and 1.75 squared is 3.0625. Divide weight by that: 75 / 3.0625 = 24.5. The two answers differ by a rounding hair (24.4 versus 24.5) only because 5 feet 9 inches is really 175.3 cm and 165 pounds is really 74.8 kg, so the round metric figures are not exact twins of the US ones. Either way the person sits comfortably in the 18.5 to 24.9 healthy band, just below the overweight line at 25.
The limits: why the number can mislead
This is the part most BMI charts skip, and it is the reason a doctor never stops at BMI. Because the formula only knows your weight and height, it cannot tell muscle from fat, cannot see where fat sits, and treats every body the same. Several groups are routinely mislabeled.
Muscle weighs more than fat for the same volume, so lean, athletic people get pushed up the scale. A muscular rugby player or a serious lifter can post an overweight or even obese BMI while carrying very little body fat. The number is technically correct and completely misleading about their health.
It also ignores where weight is distributed. Fat carried around the abdomen (an apple shape) carries far more metabolic risk than the same weight on the hips and thighs, yet BMI scores them identically. This is why a waist measurement or a waist-to-height ratio often adds information BMI cannot.
- Athletes and muscular builds: high BMI from muscle, not fat, so the category overstates risk
- Older adults: muscle is lost and fat gained with age, so a normal BMI can hide too little muscle and too much fat
- Ethnicity: health risks appear at lower BMIs for people of South Asian, Chinese, and some other Asian backgrounds, so several guidelines lower the overweight cutoff toward 23 for these groups
- Fat distribution: BMI cannot see belly fat, which drives more risk than fat elsewhere

- Children and teens: use pediatric percentile charts, never the adult bands
How to use your BMI sensibly
Think of BMI as the bathroom-scale equivalent of a smoke detector: cheap, fast, and worth paying attention to, but not a diagnosis on its own. A result outside the healthy range is a prompt to look closer, not a verdict.
If your number lands in the overweight or obese band, pair it with other signals before drawing conclusions: waist circumference, body-fat percentage, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, fitness level, and family history. If it lands in the healthy range but you carry a lot of abdominal fat or little muscle, do not let a reassuring BMI talk you out of those same checks.
The most useful move is to bring your BMI to a clinician who can put it in context with the rest of your picture. BMI is a starting point for that conversation, not the end of it.

Is a BMI in the healthy range a guarantee I am healthy?+
No. BMI only compares your weight to your height; it says nothing about your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, fitness, or how your fat is distributed. It is possible to sit in the 18.5 to 24.9 range while carrying excess abdominal fat and too little muscle, a pattern sometimes called normal-weight obesity. Why does my BMI say overweight when I am athletic and lean?+
