Character Counter
The Character Counter gives live counts of characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and reading time as you type. It also shows progress against common limits — X/Twitter, SMS, and SEO meta tags — so you can write to length. The sentence counter looks for runs of text ending in a ., !, or ?, so abbreviations count as sentence breaks too — "The U.S. Postal Service delivers mail." is counted as 3 sentences ("The U.", "S.", and "Postal Service delivers mail.") because each period ends a match, not just the final one. Word count simply splits on whitespace runs, so hyphenated compounds count as one word and there's no dictionary or language awareness. Paragraphs are only detected at a blank line (two or more consecutive line breaks) — a single line break within a block of text doesn't start a new paragraph, and every platform's progress bar (X/Twitter, SMS, SEO, Instagram) is measured against the "with spaces" character total, not the no-spaces count.

Formula & Method
Characters are counted directly from your text; words are runs of non-space characters; reading time assumes an average pace of about 200 words per minute.
Example Calculation
Paste: "The U.S. Postal Service delivers mail.\nIt runs six days a week.\n\nHoliday delivery may vary by state." — the counter shows 100 characters, 82 without spaces, 18 words, 4 lines, and 2 paragraphs (split at the blank line between the first block and "Holiday delivery…"). Sentences reads 5, not 3, because the "U.S." abbreviation's two periods each end a match on their own — the regex counts "The U.", "S.", and "Postal Service delivers mail." as three separate sentences before the other two lines add two more. Reading time shows 5s, from 18 words ÷ 200 words/minute. The X/Twitter bar shows 100/280 and stays green since it's well under the limit.

Why does the sentence count seem too high when my text has abbreviations?+
The counter treats any period, question mark, or exclamation point as the end of a sentence, so an abbreviation like "U.S." or "Mr." gets counted as its own sentence break. A line like "The U.S. Postal Service delivers mail." registers as 3 sentences instead of 1 — the count is a simple punctuation tally, not a grammar-aware sentence detector.
Why didn't my paragraph count go up when I pressed Enter?+
A new paragraph is only detected at a blank line — two or more line breaks in a row. A single Enter within a block of text is counted under "Lines" but doesn't start a new paragraph; press Enter twice (leaving an empty line) to register a paragraph break.
