A square measures the sloped roof surface, not the footprint of the building below it. That distinction matters because a roof is always larger than the building it sits on once you account for slope, and that extra area is exactly what the next step calculates.
Get roof area from footprint and pitch
Start with your building's footprint, or the horizontal area you are roofing, in square feet, typically the outline you'd get from a site plan or by measuring length times width at ground level. Then multiply by a pitch multiplier that accounts for the roof's slope, since a sloped surface always covers more area than the flat ground beneath it.
Pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run, so a 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches (1 foot) of horizontal distance. Steeper pitches carry bigger multipliers because the surface stretches out more per foot of footprint.

Add a waste factor, then convert to bundles
Shingles get trimmed at ridges, valleys, hips, rakes, and around every vent and chimney, and those cutoffs do not go back on the roof. A waste factor covers that loss: 10 percent is typical for a simple gable roof with few penetrations, and 10 to 15 percent, sometimes more, for roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, or a steep, cut-up layout.
Applying a 10 percent waste factor to the example: 20.1 x 1.10 = about 22.1 squares. You cannot buy a fraction of a square, so round up to the next whole square, putting this roof at 23 squares to order. At 15 percent waste instead (a more cut-up roof), that becomes 20.1 x 1.15 = about 23.1 squares, rounding up to 24.
Standard shingles, both 3-tab and most architectural (laminate) styles, run 3 bundles per square, so 23 squares x 3 bundles = 69 bundles for the field of the roof. Heavier premium or designer shingles sometimes run 4 or 5 bundles per square, so check the wrapper of the specific product before ordering, since that number changes the bundle count directly.
Underlayment, starter shingles, and ridge cap
The field shingle count above does not include everything on the roof.
