Sales Tax Calculator

The Sales Tax Calculator adds your local sales tax rate to a purchase price to show the exact tax amount and final total. Because it applies a single flat rate, it's also a fast way to compare how the same purchase would be taxed in different jurisdictions — for example, checking how a $30,000 car purchase changes between a 6% state rate ($1,800 tax) and an 8.5% combined state-and-city rate ($2,550 tax) before you buy. Keep in mind it works forward only, from price to total; to back out a pre-tax price from a receipt total, divide by (1 + tax rate) instead.

How This Tool Works

Enter the pre-tax price and your local sales tax rate to calculate the tax amount and total price.

Formula & Method

Sales tax = price × (tax rate ÷ 100). Total price = price + sales tax.

Example Calculation

A $120 purchase with 8.25% sales tax adds $9.90 in tax, for a total of $129.90. For a bigger purchase, a $1,500 laptop taxed at 6.5% adds $97.50 in tax, bringing the total to $1,597.50.

Please note: This calculator provides general estimates only and is not tax advice. Tax rules vary by location and change over time — consult a qualified tax professional for guidance specific to your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my local sales tax rate?+

Check your state or local revenue department's website, or look at a recent receipt from a nearby store — combined state and local rates vary widely.

Does this handle tax-exempt items?+

No — enter 0% if your item is tax-exempt in your jurisdiction. This calculator applies a flat rate to the full price entered.

Is this the same everywhere in my state?+

Not necessarily — many states allow county or city sales tax on top of the state rate, so local totals can differ even within the same state.

Can I use this to find the pre-tax price from a total that already includes tax?+

Not directly — this calculator works forward from price to total. To back out the pre-tax price from a total, divide it by (1 + tax rate as a decimal); for example, a $107.50 total at 7.5% tax works out to a $100 pre-tax price ($107.50 ÷ 1.075).

Do online purchases have sales tax too?+

Yes — since the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, most states require online retailers to collect sales tax based on the buyer's shipping address, even if the retailer has no physical store there. Enter the rate for where the item is being shipped, not where the retailer is based.
